    Evaluation of Software Product Quality Metrics

    Computing devices and associated software govern everyday life, and form the backbone of safety critical systems in banking, healthcare, automotive and other fields. Increasing system complexity, quickly evolving technologies and paradigm shifts have kept software quality research at the forefront. Standards such as ISO's 25010 express it in terms of sub-characteristics such as maintainability, reliability and security. A significant body of literature attempts to link these subcharacteristics with software metric values, with the end goal of creating a metric-based model of software product quality. However, research also identifies the most important existing barriers. Among them we mention the diversity of software application types, development platforms and languages. Additionally, unified definitions to make software metrics truly language-agnostic do not exist, and would be difficult to implement given programming language levels of variety. This is compounded by the fact that many existing studies do not detail their methodology and tooling, which precludes researchers from creating surveys to enable data analysis on a larger scale. In our paper, we propose a comprehensive study of metric values in the context of three complex, open-source applications. We align our methodology and tooling with that of existing research, and present it in detail in order to facilitate comparative evaluation. We study metric values during the entire 18-year development history of our target applications, in order to capture the longitudinal view that we found lacking in existing literature. We identify metric dependencies and check their consistency across applications and their versions.     Human and economic resources for empowerment and pregnancy-related mental health in the Arab Middle East : a systematic review

    Purpose: This systematic review synthesizes research on the influence of human and economic resources for women’s empowerment on their pre- and post-natal mental health, understudied in the Arab world. Methods: We include articles using quantitative methods from Pub Med and Web of Science. Two researchers reviewed databases and selected articles, double reviewing five percent of articles designated for inclusion. Twenty-four articles met inclusion criteria. All 24 articles measured depression as an outcome, and three included additional mental health outcomes. Results: Nine of 17 studies found an inverse association between education and depression; two of 12 studies found contradictory associations between employment and depression, and four of six studies found a positive association between financial stress and depression. These results suggest that there is a negative association between education and depression and a positive association between financial stress and depression among women in the Arab world. Firm conclusions warrant caution due to limited studies meeting inclusion criteria and large heterogeneity in mental health scales used, assessment measures, and definitions of human and economic resources for women’s empowerment. Conclusions: It is likely that education reduces depression among post-partum women and that financial stress increases their depression. These findings can be used to aid in the design of interventions to improve mother and child outcomes. However, more research in the Arab world is needed on the relationship between human and economic resources for women’s empowerment and perinatal mental health, and more consistency is needed in how resources and mental health are measured

    O tabaco foi introduzido na Europa no final do século XV. Desde então, uma das formas mais comuns para o seu consumo foi o cachimbo, além do rapé, do tabaco de mascar, do charuto e, mais recentemente, dos cigarros. Os cachimbos de cerâmica branca, largamente produzidos e utilizados na Europa desde o século XV, são encontrados em sítios arqueológicos históricos ao redor do mundo, incluindo no Brasil, em decorrência do comércio internacional, que gradualmente se intensificou após o início da conquista europeia. Eles funcionam como excelentes elementos para datação de sítios e estratos arqueológicos, tendo sido estudados em vários países a partir dessa abordagem. Ainda, esse tipo de artefato, mais que fornecer datações, permite identificar redes comerciais entre nações e desenvolver discussões de cunho social e cultural. Contudo, eles foram pouco estudados no Brasil. Visando contribuir com os estudos nacionais dessa categoria material, este artigo oferece uma revisão da literatura internacional acerca do histórico da produção dos cachimbos europeus de caulim, incluindo apresentação dos principais centros produtores; da morfologia e decoração desses produtos, considerando a cronologia do fabrico; e dos métodos de análise dos diferentes cachimbos de caulim no âmbito da arqueologia histórica.Tobacco was introduced in Europe at the end of the 15th century. Since then, one of the most traditional means for its use has been the pipe, next to the powder version, chewing, cigars, and, more recently, cigarettes. White clay tobacco pipes, widely produced and used in Europe since the 15th century, are found in historical archaeological sites around the world, including Brazil, due to international trade, which gradually intensified with the European conquest of the New World. They are excellent guides for dating archaeological sites and layers. In addition, this type of artifact, more than a dating tool, permits identifying trading networks between nations and developing discussions of cultural and social nature. These pipes, however, have been understudied in Brazil. In order to contribute to studies of this type of artifact in our country, this paper offers a revision of the international literature on the history of clay pipe production in Europe, including the presentation of main production centers; morphology and decoration of these products, considering issues of fabrication chronology; and the methods used in Historical Archaeology for analyzing clay tobacco pipes

    In the last two decades there have been dramatic changes in the epidemiology of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI), with increases in incidence and severity of disease in many countries worldwide. The incidence of CDI has also increased in surgical patients. Optimization of management of C difficile, has therefore become increasingly urgent.     Predicting object-oriented class reuse-proneness using internal quality attributes

    Class reuse-proneness is the likelihood that a class can be reused and is a key quality characteristic in object-oriented design. Because it is clearly impossible to know with certainty when, where, how, and how often a class will be reused, this likelihood can only be estimated when a class is developed. At that stage, the internal quality attributes of a class such as cohesion, coupling, and size can be measured. In this paper, we empirically study the ability of 29 internal class quality measures, individually and in combination, to estimate class reuse-proneness. Specifically, we take into account both class inheritance and class instantiation, which are two ways in which a class can be reused. Our results show that most of the considered measures are predictors for the considered reuseproneness attributes to some degree. The capability of the considered internal quality measures to predict class reuseproneness is enhanced when the measures are combined using an optimized multivariate statistical model. The results also show that the size and coupling attributes of a class have positive impacts on its reuse-proneness via inheritance and instantiation. The cohesion of a class has a negative impact on its inheritance reuse-proneness and a positive impact on its instantiation reuse-proneness. The overall results of the empirical study show that software developers can use a number of predictors to assess the reuse-proneness of classes and possibly improve the reuse-proneness of the classes by controlling their internal quality attributes. Our results contribute to the evaluation of the quality of a class, but a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of a class should take into account many more qualities. Also, not all classes in a software system are built with reuse-proneness in mind, so our results should be applied only to those that are designed and implemented to be reusable

    Des mesures de conductivité électrique et de transmission dans l'infrarouge ont été effectuées sur des couches de silicium amorphe hydrogéné et chloré préparées par décharge luminescente. En augmentant la puissance délivrée au plasma, nous avons observé un changement dans le mécanisme de transport, accompagné par une évolution des bandes induites par l'hydrogène et le chlore. Apartir de cette corrélation entre le mécanisme de transport des porteurs de charge et le spectre de transmission dans l'infrarouge nous suggérons que l'évolution de la concentration d'espèces SiCl2 avec la puissance délivrée au plasma est principalement responsable du changement de densité d'états dans la bande interdite et par conséquent du changement de mécanisme de transport.Electrical conductivity and infrared transmission measurements have been carried out on chlorinated and hydrogenated amorphous silicon films prepared by glow discharge. Upon increasing the plasma power, we observed a change of transport mechanism, accompanied by an evolution of hydrogen and chlorine related bands. From this correlation between the transport and the infrared data we suggest that the evolution of SiCl2 species with the plasma power is mainly responsible for the change in bandgap states density and consequently in the transport mechanism
